Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your brand appear, get cited and get recommended in the answers that AI engines give, and it is what AnswerixAI measures. This page explains what AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) are, how they differ from traditional SEO, and how AnswerixAI measures them. It is for marketers and SEO teams who are new to AI search.
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is the work of influencing what AI answer engines say about your category. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Google AI Overviews a question, the engine writes one answer and usually cites a handful of sources. AEO aims to make your brand one of the names in that answer and your website one of the cited sources.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) describe the same goal from two angles. AEO emphasizes the answer that the user reads. GEO emphasizes the generative AI model that writes it. In practice, both terms mean earning mentions and citations in AI-generated answers, and AnswerixAI measures both the same way.
How is AEO different from SEO?
Traditional SEO aims to rank a page on a results page so the user clicks through to your site. AEO aims to be part of the answer itself.
| SEO | AEO / GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | A list of ranked links on a search results page | Inside a written AI answer, as a mention or a cited source |
| Unit of success | Ranking position for a keyword | Being mentioned, cited and named early for a prompt |
| What you measure | Rankings, impressions, clicks, CTR | Mention rate, citation rate, position in the answer, share of voice, sentiment |
| Where the data comes from | Search Console and rank trackers | Repeated tracking of real AI answers to your prompts |
SEO and AEO are complementary: clear, authoritative, well-structured content helps both. The measurement is different, though. Search Console can't tell you how often ChatGPT recommended your brand last week, which is the gap an AEO platform fills.
Which signals help AI engines mention and cite your brand?
Three groups of signals help AI engines mention and cite your brand: content that answers the whole query, content that is easy to quote, and authority from third-party sources. AnswerixAI's Site Audit scores a page on these signals in five categories: Structure, Content, Authority, E-E-A-T and Trust.
- Content that answers the whole query: a direct answer up front, coverage of the question and its sub-questions, and the entities a buyer expects to see. Site Audit checks these in the Content category.
- Content that is easy to quote: direct answers under clear headings, lists, comparison tables, FAQs and structured data are easier for an AI engine to extract and cite. Site Audit checks these in the Structure category, and AI Readability publishes
llms.txtand other machine-readable files about your business. - Authority and third-party sources: cited sources, statistics, author bylines and press mentions (the Authority and E-E-A-T categories), plus reviews, editorial articles and forums that mention your brand. The Citations page shows which third-party sources AI engines rely on in your category.
What does AnswerixAI measure?
AnswerixAI measures how often AI engines mention and cite your brand for a list of prompts: the natural-language questions your potential customers ask AI engines, such as "best CRM for small business" or "alternatives to Salesforce". Once a day, AnswerixAI asks each prompt, detects mentions, citations, position and sentiment, calculates a 0–100 Visibility score, and generates content opportunities. Step by step, AnswerixAI:
- Asks each active prompt on every AI engine selected for it.
- Detects your brand mentions, the pages cited from your domains, your position relative to your competitors, and the sentiment of each answer.
- Calculates a 0–100 Visibility score for your brand and for each competitor, which you can filter by date, topic, platform and region. See Visibility scoring.
- Generates content opportunities automatically for the prompts where you have the most to gain.
