GEO Strategies: 10 Tactics to Rank Higher in AI Answers

GEO strategies are specific tactics that make AI engines more likely to use and cite your content. The best-supported ones are: answer first, cite primary sources, add quotations and statistics, write fluently, cover follow-up questions, keep pages crawlable, earn genuine mentions and measure citations per engine. Keyword stuffing does not work.
Key takeaways
- In the GEO study (KDD 2024), citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics raised visibility by 30–40%.
- Lower-ranked pages gained most: citing sources lifted pages ranked fifth by 115.1%.
- Access comes first: blocked or unindexed pages cannot be cited by any engine.
- Google warns that mass-producing pages for every query variation violates its spam policies.
- Measure each engine separately and keep your prompt set fixed.
This list is the tactical companion to our generative engine optimization guide, which covers what GEO is and the research behind it.
What are GEO strategies?
GEO strategies are repeatable changes to content, site access and authority that raise how often generative engines name and cite you. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving visibility inside AI-written answers from engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.
"Ranking higher" in this context means three things:
- Being mentioned in more answers for your target prompts.
- Being cited as a linked source more often.
- Appearing earlier in the answer when you are named.
Which GEO strategies have the strongest evidence?
Content changes that add evidence have the strongest published evidence; access and measurement tactics are backed by official platform documentation. The table summarizes each tactic and its source.
| # | GEO strategy | Evidence | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Answer first | Q&A pairs can be lifted "word for word" | Microsoft Bing, 2025 |
| 2 | Cite primary sources | 30–40% visibility gain; 115.1% for rank-5 pages | GEO paper, 2024 |
| 3 | Add verbatim quotations | Best single method; +22% on Perplexity.ai | GEO paper, 2024 |
| 4 | Add statistics | Up to +37% on Perplexity.ai subjective impression | GEO paper, 2024 |
| 5 | Improve fluency, define terms | Fluency plus statistics was the best combination | GEO paper, 2024 |
| 6 | Cover follow-up questions | AI features use "query fan-out" | Google, 2025 |
| 7 | Keep pages crawlable and indexable | Required to be a supporting link | Google, OpenAI, Perplexity docs |
| 8 | Use lists and tables | "Clean, reusable segments" | Microsoft Bing, 2025 |
| 9 | Earn genuine mentions and trust | Inauthentic mentions are not "as helpful as it might seem" | Google, 2026 |
| 10 | Measure per engine | AI performance reports exist for Copilot and Google Search | Bing, Google |

Content strategies: how do you make pages easier to cite?
Make each page answer clearly, back claims with evidence and read smoothly. These five tactics come straight from the GEO study by Aggarwal et al. (arXiv:2311.09735; DOI), which tested nine rewriting methods on 10,000 queries.
1. Answer the question first
Open with a 40–60 word answer that starts "X is…" or "To do X…". Microsoft's Bing team explains why in its October 2025 guidance:
"Direct questions with clear answers mirror the way people search. Assistants can often lift these pairs word for word into AI-generated responses."
2. Cite primary sources
Link official docs, research papers and government data next to each claim. Cite Sources was one of three top methods, and it "led to a substantial 115.1% increase in visibility for websites ranked fifth in SERP". That makes it the best lever for sites that do not rank first.
3. Add verbatim quotations
Quote experts or primary documents exactly, with a link. Quotation Addition scored 27.8 against a baseline of 19.5 on the paper's Position-Adjusted Word Count metric. On Perplexity.ai it gave "a 22% improvement over the baseline".
4. Replace vague claims with statistics
Swap "most users" for a sourced number, or cut the claim. Statistics Addition scored 25.9 against the 19.5 baseline, and on Perplexity.ai it improved the Subjective Impression metric by up to 37%. Only use numbers you can trace to a source.
5. Write fluently and define technical terms
Use short sentences and explain terms on first use. Fluency Optimization scored 25.1, and pairing it with Statistics Addition beat any single method by more than 5.5% in a 200-example test.
Coverage strategy: how do you match follow-up questions?
Cover the main question and its likely follow-ups on one strong page. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use a 'query fan-out' technique — issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources — to develop a response" (Google Search Central).
6. Answer the sub-questions, not every variation
Add question-style H2s for the follow-ups a buyer would ask next, such as cost, alternatives and setup. Open each one with a direct answer, just like the page introduction. A good test is to list the five questions a sales rep hears after the first one, then check that the page answers each of them in plain words.
Do not spin up a page per variation. Google's AI optimization guide says creating separate content for fan-out queries "primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses in Google Search violates Google's scaled content abuse spam policy."
Technical strategies: how do you make sure engines can reach you?
Make sure each engine's crawler can fetch your pages and that the key text is plain HTML. Retrieval happens before generation, so this is a hard gate.
7. Keep pages crawlable, indexable and snippet-eligible
Check these for every priority page:
- Google: the page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- ChatGPT search: OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features" (OpenAI docs).
- Perplexity: PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" (Perplexity docs).
- Snippet controls:

8. Use lists and tables, and keep answers visible
Microsoft notes that "Bulleted lists, numbered steps, and comparison tables break complex details into clean, reusable segments." The same guidance warns against hiding key answers in tabs or expandable menus, since AI systems may not render them. Structured data can help parsing, but Google says it "isn't required for generative AI search". If you use it, it must match the visible text.
Authority strategy: how do you earn trust from AI engines?
Earn trust the way you would with a careful reader: show who wrote the page, share real experience and get mentioned by others for good reasons.
9. Earn genuine mentions and show E-E-A-T
Google's helpful content guidance describes E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness) and says "Of these aspects, trust is most important." Its AI guide also warns that "seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem."
Third-party platforms do matter. In a Pew Research Center study of 68,879 Google searches, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most cited sources in AI summaries and together made up 15% of them (Pew, 2025). Useful answers in forums, genuine reviews and expert interviews build this presence honestly. Our guide on brand authority in AI search goes deeper.
Measurement strategy: how do you know a tactic worked?
Measure mentions, citations and answer position on a fixed prompt set, per engine, before and after each change.
10. Track citations per engine and iterate
Platform reports now cover part of this. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report (public preview, February 2026) shows total citations, cited pages and "grounding queries" for Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. Google's AI optimization guide points to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Neither covers ChatGPT or Perplexity, so you still need cross-engine tracking.
Which GEO tactics should you avoid?
Avoid tactics that research or official guidance says do not work:
- Keyword stuffing. It offered "little to no improvement" in the GEO paper and performed 10% worse than the baseline on Perplexity.ai.
- llms.txt as a Google lever. Google says Google Search ignores it; it "will neither harm nor help" rankings there.
- Mass-produced variation pages. They risk Google's scaled content abuse policy.
- Bought or fake mentions. Google says its AI features depend on systems that block spam.
- Invented statistics. They undermine the trust these tactics depend on.
How do you prioritize GEO strategies?
Fix access first, then improve evidence on your most important pages, then widen coverage and authority. This order stops you from polishing pages that engines cannot reach.
A simple sequence for a small team:
- Weeks 1–2: gates (strategy 7). Confirm indexing and crawler access for your top 10 pages. This is quick and unblocks everything else.
- Weeks 3–6: evidence (strategies 1–5). Rewrite those pages with direct answers, sources, quotes and statistics. These had the largest measured effects in the GEO study.
- Weeks 7–10: coverage and format (strategies 6 and 8). Add follow-up questions, lists and tables where readers need them.
- Ongoing: authority and measurement (strategies 9 and 10). Build genuine mentions, and re-run your prompt set on a fixed schedule.
Adjust the order to your data. If a competitor is cited on a prompt where you are not even retrieved, start with access. If you are retrieved but rarely quoted, start with evidence. For a longer planning view, see our AI visibility strategy framework.
Where AnswerixAI fits
When we built AnswerixAI, our team focused on the measurement loop in strategy 10. Citations Monitoring shows which domains and URLs each answer cites, split into your site, competitors and third parties. Query Fan-Out shows only the sub-queries that engines actually report, mostly from Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, which helps with strategy 6. The Site Audit scores a page on 47 AEO and GEO signals, including citations, statistics and quotations, and lists fixes.
Tracking covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Grok. The Starter plan covers ChatGPT and Perplexity, and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial; see pricing. For page-level editing steps, read how to optimize content for AEO.
FAQ
Which GEO strategy should I start with?
Start with access, then evidence. Confirm that your key pages are indexed by Google and that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Then add sources, statistics and quotations to the pages that target your most important prompts. In the GEO study, those three content changes gave the largest visibility gains, and they need no new pages.
Do GEO strategies work the same on every AI engine?
No. The GEO paper found that the best method varied by subject domain, and each engine uses its own index or crawler. Google AI features draw on the Google Search index, ChatGPT search relies on OAI-SearchBot, and Perplexity on PerplexityBot. Track each engine separately so you can see where a tactic works and where it does not.
Is it worth creating a page for every AI prompt?
No. Google's AI optimization guide says that creating separate content for every query variation, mainly to influence AI answers, violates its scaled content abuse spam policy. It also calls this an ineffective long-term strategy. A better approach is one strong page per topic that answers the main question and its common follow-ups.
How quickly do GEO changes show up in AI answers?
No engine publishes a timeline. A change can only appear after the engine recrawls or re-indexes the page, and answers also vary from run to run. Re-run the same prompts on a fixed schedule after each change and look at the trend across many prompts rather than a single answer.
Do GEO strategies replace traditional SEO?
No. Google says its generative AI features rely on its core Search ranking and quality systems, and that optimizing for them is still SEO. ChatGPT search and Perplexity also depend on crawlers reaching your pages. GEO strategies add evidence, coverage and measurement habits on top of solid SEO, so keep the technical and content basics in place.
