GEO Tools for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude: Engine Coverage Compared

GEO tools for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are apps that ask AI assistants your buyers' questions and log whether your brand is named, cited or left out. The biggest difference between them is engine coverage: some track only ChatGPT and Google, while others add Claude, Perplexity, Copilot or Grok. Pick the tool that covers the engines your buyers use.
Key takeaways
- Engine coverage is the first filter, because a tool can't report on an assistant it never queries.
- ChatGPT and Google's AI answers are the baseline, and Google says AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode over 1 billion (Google, 2026).
- Claude coverage is less common: of the 12 tools below, 7 list it, but 4 limit it to an add-on, a top tier or one product.
- Check the plan, not just the home page, since many vendors list more engines than their entry plan includes.
- Coverage is only half the job; you still need source data and a plan to fix the gaps.
What are GEO tools for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude?
GEO tools track and improve how a brand appears in AI-generated answers: they send a fixed set of prompts to each AI engine on a schedule, then save each answer and scan it for brands, links and competitors.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of shaping content so AI systems use it in their answers. Wikipedia defines it as structuring content and managing online presence to improve visibility in responses from generative AI. The term comes from a 2023 paper by Aggarwal and co-authors, which found that GEO methods can lift visibility in AI answers by up to 40% (arXiv, 2023).
A GEO tool tracks four things per answer:
- Mentions. Does the answer name your brand?
- Citations. Does it link to your pages as a source? A citation is a link the AI shows as proof for a claim.
- Position. How early does your brand show up next to rivals?
- Sources. Which other sites does the engine lean on for your topic?
This post sorts tools by the engines they cover; for the same kind of tools sorted by features, such as sentiment, content help and APIs, read our guide to GEO tools compared by features.
Why does engine coverage matter so much?
Each AI engine finds and cites sources in its own way, so a brand can lead in one engine and be missing in another for the same question.
The engines differ in three important ways, and each one changes which pages get cited:
- Where they search. ChatGPT has its own search crawler. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features" (OpenAI docs). Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google Search.
- When they search. Claude decides for each prompt, and Anthropic says Claude searches for recent news, current prices or facts about firms that may have changed, while for stable facts it answers from what it already knows (Anthropic docs).
- How they cite. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out", which means running many related searches on subtopics before writing the answer (Google Search Central). As a result, pages that don't rank for the main query can still be cited.
Audience size is uneven too: at Google I/O 2026, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, AI Mode has passed 1 billion and the Gemini app has passed 900 million (Google, 2026). That scale explains why almost every tracking platform covers Google's surfaces first.
How do GEO tools collect answers from each engine?
Most GEO platforms use one of two collection methods, and the choice affects what you see. Interface-based collection loads the consumer product, such as the ChatGPT app or a Google results page, and records the answer a real visitor would receive, including citations, shopping cards and follow-up suggestions. API-based collection sends the prompt to the provider's developer endpoint, which is cheaper and more predictable but may use a different model configuration, a different search integration or no web retrieval at all.
Retrieval matters because most citations come from retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), where the model runs a live search, reads the returned pages and grounds its answer in them. When retrieval is switched off, the model answers from training data and usually shows no sources, so citation metrics collapse to zero even though brand mentions may still appear. Ask each vendor which method it uses per engine, whether web search is enabled, and how it handles personalization, location and conversation history, because each of these variables changes the answer distribution you are measuring.
Which GEO tools cover which AI engines?
The table shows what each vendor's own site said in September 2026. "Add-on" means the engine costs extra, "on Enterprise" means it is listed only for the top tier, and "to pick from" means the vendor lists it as a model you choose for your plan. An engine missing from a row means we could not find it on the vendor's site, not that it can never be added.

Which tools are best for ChatGPT visibility?
Every tool in the table tracks ChatGPT, so the real question is depth: for ChatGPT you want the cited links, the rival brands in each answer, and a daily history.
Tools built for AI answers first
- Profound lists ChatGPT on every plan and adds ChatGPT Shopping on Enterprise. Its trial runs 50 prompts daily for 7 days on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews.
- Peec AI reports visibility, position and sentiment for each model, and it says it runs each prompt once every 24 hours.
- Otterly.AI includes ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot in its base plans.
- Promptwatch says its data comes from real user interfaces rather than APIs, and it also shows when AI bots read your pages.
SEO suites with ChatGPT tracking
- Semrush says Prompt Tracking covers ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar runs prompts through ChatGPT and five other engines, and you can add your own prompts too.
- SE Ranking sells a ChatGPT tracker next to its AI Overviews tracker.

Which tools are best for Gemini and Google's AI answers?
Pick a platform that covers Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode together, because all three use Google's index but don't always cite the same pages.
Platforms that list all three include AnswerixAI, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, SE Ranking and Advanced Web Ranking, although Otterly.AI and Semrush split them across add-ons or separate products. Semrush covers Gemini and AI Mode in Prompt Tracking and tracks AI Overviews through Position Tracking. Otterly.AI sells Gemini and AI Mode as optional add-ons.
Don't skip Google's free data either, because since June 2026 Search Console has had a dedicated report for AI features that shows impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google says it reached all websites by August 31, 2026 (Google Search Central Blog, 2026). It does not show which competitors appeared next to you, which is the gap GEO tools fill.
Google's Search Central team walks through the new report here:
Which GEO tools track Claude?
Seven of the 12 tools list Claude: Profound (top tier), Peec AI (top tier), Otterly.AI (add-on), Ahrefs Brand Radar (Custom Prompts only), Promptwatch, Searchable and Nightwatch.
Claude works a bit differently from the rest, because it searches only when it judges that a question needs fresh facts. When it does search, Anthropic's docs are clear:
"Citations are always enabled for web search." — Anthropic, web search tool documentation
Claude answers are therefore easy to audit for sources when search runs, but many come from training data with no links at all, so on Claude the mention rate often tells you more than citation rate.
We should be plain about our own coverage. When we built AnswerixAI's platform list, we chose ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Grok. Claude is not a tracked platform today, so if Claude matters most to your buyers, pick one of the seven tools above for it.
How do you check a GEO tool before you buy?
Test it in a trial and know its limits, rather than trusting a row of logos.
Test the coverage claims
Logos on a home page often represent integrations or MCP connections rather than tracked engines, so use this five-step check:
- Read the pricing page. The pricing page shows which engines each plan includes and which cost extra.
- Ask how answers are collected. The app interface, the API or a mix can produce different results.
- Run one prompt by hand. Ask the same question in the real assistant and compare it with the answer the tool saved.
- Check location and language. Answers change by country, so make sure you can set both.
- Check how often each engine refreshes. Some tools refresh expensive engines less often; Ahrefs, for example, says Claude uses 8 checks per update.
Know what a GEO tool can't tell you
A GEO tool shows what AI engines said, but it can't show why they said it, because outside tools can't see inside the models.
Keep these limits in mind:
- Answers vary. The same prompt can get a new answer on each run, so read trends rather than single days.
- Prompts are samples. Your list is an estimate of what buyers ask, not their real chat history.
- Traffic is separate. Being cited is not the same as receiving a visit: Pew found that users clicked a link inside an AI summary on just 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 2025).
How does AnswerixAI cover these engines?
AnswerixAI runs your prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Grok. Grok is currently listed as temporarily unavailable on our status page. The Starter plan tracks ChatGPT and Perplexity, while Growth and Business track every platform. All plans start with a 14-day free trial (see pricing).
For each answer, Answer Engine Insights logs mentions, position and sentiment, while Citations Monitoring splits the cited sites into yours, your rivals' and third parties, per prompt and per engine. Our team shows the score formula right in the dashboard.
| Part of the score | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | 60% | Share of answers that name your brand. |
| Citation rate | 25% | Share of answers that cite your site. |
| Position | 15% | How early your brand shows up when named. |
The position component is the average of 1 divided by the brand's mention position across answers that name it, so a brand named first scores 1.0 and a brand named third scores about 0.33. When we built the score, we also scaled that position term by the evidence behind it, reaching half weight at 20 mentioned answers, which prevents a handful of lucky first-place mentions from outranking a competitor that appears consistently.
The same formula runs for each engine, so you can see, for example, that you lead on Perplexity but trail on Gemini for the same prompts.
What should you do after you choose a tool?
Start small, then grow: a short prompt list on the right engines beats a long list on the wrong ones.
- Write 20 to 50 prompts your buyers really ask, grouped by topic.
- Track them daily on the two or three engines your buyers use most.
- Review the cited sources each week and list the third-party sites that keep appearing.
- Fix the pages that engines skip, then watch whether your citation rate moves.

FAQ
Which GEO tool tracks the most AI engines?
Among the vendors we checked in September 2026, Peec AI's Enterprise tier lists the most models, adding Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral and Naver AI. Promptwatch lists ten engines, including Grok, DeepSeek and Meta. Engine count alone is a weak test, though, so check which engines your plan includes and how often each one is refreshed.
Do GEO tools use the ChatGPT app or the API?
It depends on the vendor, and most do not say; Promptwatch says it uses real data from user interfaces rather than APIs. Ask each vendor how it collects answers, because API answers can differ from what people see in the ChatGPT app when web search, location or memory changes the response.
Can one tool track ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews together?
Yes. AnswerixAI, Otterly.AI, Profound, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Searchable, SE Ranking, AccuRanker, Advanced Web Ranking and Nightwatch all list both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Check the plan, though, because some vendors sell extra engines as add-ons and others reserve them for top tiers.
Is Claude worth tracking for brand visibility?
Track Claude if your buyers use it for research, so ask customers which assistants they use before paying for it. Claude can search the web and, per Anthropic's documentation, always shows citations when it does. Tools that list Claude include Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Promptwatch, Searchable and Nightwatch, often as an add-on or top-tier option.
How often should a GEO tool re-run prompts?
Daily runs are the common default: Peec AI says it runs each prompt once every 24 hours on every model you track, and Otterly.AI lists daily tracking on its plans. AI answers change from run to run, so daily data read as weekly trends is more reliable than one-off checks or monthly snapshots.
