AI Overviews Rank Tracker Tools: 7 Keyword Trackers Compared

An AI Overviews rank tracker is a keyword rank tracker that also checks Google AI Overviews. For each keyword, it logs whether an AI Overview appeared, whether your site was cited in it, and often where your link sits. Seven well-known rank trackers now do this: Semrush, SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Advanced Web Ranking, AccuRanker, Nightwatch and seoClarity.
Key takeaways
- Most major rank trackers now detect AI Overviews on the results page, and the better ones also log which domains were cited.
- Trackers count AI Overview "position" in different ways; Semrush, for example, records a citation as a #1 ranking.
- Google says AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly users, so the feature appears on many tracked keywords (Google, 2026).
- Search Console now reports AI feature impressions, but it doesn't show competitors or cited sources.
- Rank trackers suit keyword lists, so for full customer questions across chat assistants, pair them with a prompt-based tracker.
What is an AI Overviews rank tracker?
A rank tracker is software that checks where your pages rank on the search engine results page (SERP), which Wikipedia defines as the page a search engine displays in response to a user's query. Many trackers check a keyword list every day. An AI Overviews rank tracker adds one more step: it looks for the AI summary at the top of the results page and then reads its source links.
Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear above some search results, with links to the pages they draw on. The feature launched in the United States in May 2024 after a year as the Search Generative Experience (Wikipedia). For each keyword, a tracker can record:
- Presence. Did an AI Overview show for this keyword today?
- Citation. Was your domain one of the linked sources?
- Source position. Where did your link appear among the sources?
- Competitors. Which other domains were cited?
- Organic rank. Where did you rank in the normal results below?
This post covers keyword rank trackers; if you want to track brand mentions and citations across full prompts, see our guide to Google AI Overviews tracking tools.
Why does rank tracking need to include AI Overviews?
A #1 organic rank means less when an AI summary sits above it, so tracking only the traditional links misses the most prominent part of the page.
A 2025 Pew Research Center study of 900 U.S. adults found that 18% of their Google searches in March 2025 produced an AI summary (Pew Research Center, 2025). When a summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% of visits without one, and they ended their session on 26% of pages with a summary, against 16% without one.
A keyword can therefore hold its rank and still lose clicks. A tracker that flags AI Overviews shows which keywords are at risk, and one that also logs citations shows whether you are part of the answer.
How do rank trackers count your position in AI Overviews?
There is no industry standard: each tool counts an AI Overview citation in its own way, so only compare numbers within a single tool.
Semrush is the clearest documented example, and its knowledge base says:
"When your domain is cited as a source in an AI Overview, Position Tracking records this as a #1 ranking—regardless of where your page actually ranks in the regular organic results below." — Semrush Knowledge Base
Semrush adds a toggle to view ranks with or without AI Overviews. SE Ranking says it shows "where your website ranks within" the AI Overview, plus competitors' position changes (SE Ranking). Advanced Web Ranking puts organic rankings and AI Overview citations in one report.
The counting rule has a measurable effect on reporting. As an illustration, if one keyword in a 10-keyword set ranks #7 organically but is cited in the AI Overview, a tool that records that citation as #1 improves the set's average position by 0.6 places, even though nothing changed in the organic results. Multiply that across hundreds of keywords and the difference between blended and organic-only views becomes large enough to change conclusions in a monthly report.
Before you compare two tools, ask each vendor three things:
- Does a citation count as position 1, or as its place in the source list?
- Are AI Overview positions blended into average position by default?
- Is the AI Overview expanded before the sources are read?
Which rank trackers detect AI Overviews?
The table lists what each vendor's own website said in September 2026; we did not run hands-on tests, and anything missing from a row is something we could not find on the vendor's site.
| Rank tracker | How it handles AI Overviews | AI Mode and chat assistants |
|---|---|---|
| Semrush Position Tracking | Detects them, logs your citation as a #1 ranking, and lets you toggle them in or out. | AI Mode since July 2025; ChatGPT and Gemini via Prompt Tracking |
| SE Ranking | Detects them, logs your position inside them, and keeps cached copies of results. | AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity as separate trackers |
| Ahrefs Rank Tracker | Detects them as 1 of 19 SERP features across 190+ locations. | Chat assistants via Brand Radar |
| Advanced Web Ranking | Detects them and logs citations next to organic rankings, using your normal keyword quota. | AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini |
| AccuRanker | Tracks them through AccuLLM, including cited sources. | AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity |
| Nightwatch | Detects them as a SERP feature and links rank changes to AI citations. | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity |

What does each AI Overviews rank tracker do best?
Each tool has a clear strength, so match it to how your team already works.
Semrush Position Tracking
Semrush lets you filter tracked keywords to those that triggered an AI Overview and see where your domain appears as a source, while Semrush Sensor tracks how often AI Overviews show across industries. In July 2025, Semrush added AI Mode as a search engine option, and at launch that beta was limited to 50 AI Mode keywords on Guru and Business plans (Semrush, 2025).
SE Ranking
SE Ranking's AI Overviews tracker shows whether an AI Overview appears and where your site ranks inside it. It categorizes cited sources as media, blogs and forums and keeps cached copies of results so you can see what changed.
Ahrefs Rank Tracker
Ahrefs Rank Tracker lists AI Overview as one of 19 SERP features it tracks, across 190+ locations. For brand mentions in AI answers, Ahrefs sells Brand Radar as a separate product.
Advanced Web Ranking
AWR tracks Google Search with AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. You can run checks on demand or on a daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule, and tracking an AI platform uses your existing keyword quota. As of September 2026, AWR says AI tracking is included on every paid plan, from $139 per month.
AccuRanker
AccuRanker adds AI tracking through AccuLLM, which covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode and tracks prompts, sentiment and cited sources.
Nightwatch
Nightwatch tracks the whole results page, including AI Overviews, and also checks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Its "Citation Intelligence" feature aims to link rank changes to shifts in AI citations. It offers a 14-day trial.
seoClarity
seoClarity sells AI Overviews tracking inside Clarity ArcAI. It lists tracking of brand citations and mentions in AI search, plus AI bot activity.
What does Search Console add to AI Overviews rank tracking?
Search Console gives you Google's own counts, while a rank tracker gives you the keyword view and shows your competitors, so use both.
Google launched a generative AI performance report in Search Console on June 3, 2026, showing impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google Search Central Blog, 2026). Google says it reached all websites by August 31, 2026.
Here is Google's Search Central team on the new report:
| Need | Search Console | Rank tracker |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions in AI features | Yes, from Google's own data. | No, only sampled checks. |
| Which keyword showed an AI Overview | Not listed in the announcement. | Yes, for tracked keywords. |
| Whether a rival was cited | No. | Yes, in most tools. |
| Daily history by keyword | No. | Yes. |
| Cost | Free. | Paid plans. |
When should you use a prompt tracker instead?
Use a prompt tracker when your customers ask full questions in chat assistants: rank trackers start from short keywords, prompt trackers start from full questions, and both have a place.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out", running many related searches on subtopics to build one answer (Google Search Central). One keyword check can miss the side questions that shape the answer. That matters because the answer is not fixed: the 2023 GEO paper found that content optimization can lift a source's visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% (arXiv, 2023), so tracking at the question level shows whether your changes are working.
AnswerixAI is a prompt tracker, not a keyword rank tracker. We built it to run your prompts on Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and Grok. Growth and Business plans cover every platform, while Starter covers ChatGPT and Perplexity (see plans). Prompt Monitoring tracks your prompts over time, and Query Fan-Out shows the sub-queries that engines report, mostly from Perplexity and Copilot.
Many SEO teams run both, using a rank tracker for keywords and a prompt tracker for questions. Our team kept the AnswerixAI score formula in plain view so you can compare it with your rank data: 60% mention rate, 25% citation rate and 15% position in the answer.
What can go wrong with AI Overviews rank data?
AI Overviews rank data is noisier than classic rank data, so know the weak spots so you don't read too much into one number.
- The answer can change each time. Two checks on the same day can show different sources, so look at the trend over a week or more.
- Location matters. A check from one city may not match what a customer sees in another, so set the location and device for each keyword.
- Some answers load late. If a tool reads the page before the AI Overview has fully rendered, it can miss sources, so ask how the tool handles this.
- Blended numbers hide the story. If AI Overview hits are mixed into average rank, your rank can jump for reasons that have nothing to do with your page. Keep one view with them and one without.
- A citation is not a click. Pew found users clicked a link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits; being cited is still worth it, but judge it on reach, not traffic alone.
The remedy is simple: track fewer keywords well, check them often, read the trend, and keep notes on what you changed and when.
How do you choose an AI Overviews rank tracker?
Choose the tracker that fits your keyword list, your budget and how you want position counted, and run a short trial with your own keywords before you buy.
- Start with your current tool. If you already pay for Semrush, Ahrefs or AWR, turn on their AI Overview filters first.
- Check the counting rule. Ask how a citation affects position and average rank.
- Check competitor data. Make sure you can see which other domains were cited.
- Check AI Mode support. AI Mode is growing, and Google says it has passed 1 billion monthly users.
- Check cost per keyword. Some tools use your existing keyword quota, while others charge separately for AI checks.

FAQ
What is an AI Overviews rank tracker?
An AI Overviews rank tracker is a keyword rank tracker that also spots Google AI Overviews. For each keyword, it logs if an AI Overview showed up. It also logs if your site was cited in it. Some tools also note where your link sits among the sources, and which rival sites were cited.
How does Semrush count an AI Overview citation?
Semrush's Position Tracking records it as a #1 ranking when your domain is cited in an AI Overview, whatever your organic position below it. You can toggle AI Overviews on or off to compare. That means a keyword can show as #1 with the toggle on and much lower with it off, so always check which view a report uses.
Can a rank tracker see Google AI Mode?
Some can. Semrush added AI Mode as a search engine option in Position Tracking in July 2025. SE Ranking sells an AI Mode tracker, and Advanced Web Ranking and AccuRanker list AI Mode tracking. AI Mode answers are conversational, so results vary more between runs than classic rankings do.
Do I still need a rank tracker if Search Console has an AI report?
Usually, yes. Search Console's AI report shows impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI features. Google's post about it does not list query data or rivals. A rank tracker adds the keyword view. It also shows who else was cited. You need both to plan your next fix.
How often should AI Overviews rankings be checked?
Check your top keywords daily and the long tail weekly. AI Overviews can change between runs. Nightwatch tracks search engines daily, and Advanced Web Ranking offers on-demand, daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly schedules. Review trends weekly rather than reacting to one day's result.
