Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content easy for AI answer engines, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, to find, trust and quote. The goal is simple. When someone asks a question in your category, the answer should mention your brand and cite your page as a source.

Key takeaways

  • AEO targets the answer, not the results page. Success means being named and cited inside AI-generated responses.
  • Google says optimizing for its AI features "is still SEO". Crawlable, indexable, helpful pages remain the entry ticket.
  • Answer engines use retrieval: they search an index, read passages and write a response that links to supporting pages.
  • Peer-reviewed research found that adding citations, quotations and statistics raised source visibility by 30–40%.
  • Measure AEO with mention rate, citation rate and answer position across a fixed set of prompts, not with rankings alone.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is the work of shaping content so AI systems can extract a direct, reliable answer from it and credit you for it. An answer engine is any search product that replies with a written answer instead of, or on top of, a list of links.

The main answer engines are:

  • Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, inside Google Search.
  • ChatGPT search and Perplexity, which cite web sources.
  • Microsoft Copilot, grounded in the Bing index, and Gemini, Google's assistant.

AEO is not a new discipline built from scratch. Google's own guide to optimizing for generative AI features addresses the label directly:

"From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."

AEO is best understood as SEO with a different finish line: you still earn your place through quality and crawlability, then check whether the answer uses you. For a short definition you can share with your team, see our glossary entry on answer engine optimization.

Why does AEO matter now?

AEO matters because a growing share of searches now end with an AI answer, and fewer people click through to websites when one appears. If the answer does not name you, many buyers will never see you.

Three data points show the scale:

  1. Google reported that AI Overviews had "scaled to over 1.5 billion users" and were available in 200 countries and territories, in its I/O 2025 keynote recap (Google, May 2025).
  2. The same recap said the Gemini app had over 400 million monthly active users (Google, 2025).
  3. A Pew Research Center analysis of 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults found that 18% of searches produced an AI summary (Pew Research Center, 2025).

The click data is the part that changes strategy. In Pew's study, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not. They clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits. Pew also found that browsing sessions ended on 26% of pages with an AI summary, compared with 16% without one.

The answer itself is now where brands win or lose attention. This is often called zero-click search, and AEO is the response to it.

How do answer engines choose what to cite?

Answer engines retrieve pages from a search index, read the most relevant passages, and generate a response grounded in those sources. Your page must first be retrievable, then it must contain a passage that answers the question clearly.

Retrieval comes first

Most answer engines use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). RAG is a technique where a model fetches documents at query time and uses them as evidence, instead of relying only on what it learned in training. Google describes RAG as a way "to improve the quality, accuracy, and freshness of AI responses" by relying on its core ranking systems to retrieve pages from its index.

Every engine has a gate:

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode only link to pages that are "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet", according to Google's AI features documentation.
  • ChatGPT search surfaces sites through OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler, which OpenAI says "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features" (OpenAI crawler docs).
  • Perplexity says PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" (Perplexity crawler docs).

If robots.txt blocks these crawlers, or the page is not indexed, no amount of writing will get you cited.

Query fan-out widens the net

Google's AI features "may use a 'query fan-out' technique — issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources — to develop a response". Query fan-out means one question becomes several sub-searches. A page that answers the sub-questions well can be cited even if it does not rank first for the main query.

Passages win, not pages

Next, the model looks for text it can reuse. Microsoft's Bing team puts it plainly in its October 2025 guidance: "Direct questions with clear answers mirror the way people search. Assistants can often lift these pairs word for word into AI-generated responses."

How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?

AEO shares SEO's foundations but measures a different outcome. GEO is a near-synonym that comes from academic research. The table shows how the three labels relate.

Aspect Classic SEO Answer engine optimization (AEO) Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Main goal Rank pages in the list of links Be named and quoted in the answer Raise your share of a generated answer
Where it shows Blue links, snippets AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot Same surfaces as AEO
Core unit The page The passage that answers a question The source's words in the response
Main metric Position, clicks Mentions, citations, answer position Visibility in the response
Origin of the term Search industry practice Industry practice Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024

In practice, many teams use AEO and GEO interchangeably. Wikipedia's entry on generative engine optimization lists answer engine optimization among the related terms for the same concept. If you want the research background, read our generative engine optimization guide.

What does the research say works?

The strongest public evidence comes from the GEO paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, published at KDD 2024 (arXiv:2311.09735; DOI 10.1145/3637528.3671900). The authors built GEO-bench, a benchmark of 10,000 queries across 25 domains, and tested nine ways of rewriting a source page.

Their headline results:

  • Cite Sources, Quotation Addition and Statistics Addition "achieved a relative improvement of 30-40% on the Position-Adjusted Word Count metric".
  • Keyword stuffing offered "little to no improvement". On Perplexity.ai it performed 10% worse than the unmodified baseline.
  • Quotation Addition gave a 22% improvement on Perplexity.ai, the one live engine they tested.
  • Lower-ranked pages gained most. Citing sources raised visibility by 115.1% for pages ranked fifth in search results.

Results also varied by domain, so test changes on your own prompts instead of copying a checklist.

What makes content "answer-ready"?

Answer-ready content states the answer early, backs it with evidence and is easy to parse. Use this checklist when you review a page:

Check What good looks like Why it helps
Direct answer The first 40–60 words answer the main question Engines can lift a complete answer
Question headings H2s mirror real questions, each answered in the first sentence Matches fan-out sub-queries
Evidence Numbers, quotes and sources are linked and dated Research links these to higher visibility
Definitions Technical terms are explained on first use Makes passages self-contained
Structure Lists, steps and tables where data is comparable Microsoft calls these "reusable segments"
Freshness Visible published and updated dates Signals the facts are current
Access Allowed in robots.txt, indexed, fast, text-based Retrieval happens before generation

Two cautions come from Google's guide. First, "There's no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it." Second, "Structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add." Structured data still helps with rich results, and it must match the visible text. For hands-on rewriting steps, see how to optimize content for AEO.

How does E-E-A-T apply to AEO?

E-E-A-T still applies because answer engines draw on the same quality systems as search. Google defines E-E-A-T as experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, and says "Of these aspects, trust is most important" (Google Search Central).

For AEO, that means a few habits:

  • Show who wrote the page and why they know the topic.
  • Share first-hand experience or original data.
  • Cite primary sources and keep claims checkable.

Google's guide adds a warning about shortcuts: "seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem." Earned mentions in reviews, forums and press still matter. Manufactured ones do not.

How do you measure AEO?

You measure AEO by running a fixed set of real prompts on each answer engine and recording whether your brand is mentioned, cited and placed early in the answer.

Start with these metrics:

  1. Mention rate: the share of answers that name your brand.
  2. Citation rate: the share of answers that link to your domain.
  3. Answer position: how early your brand appears when it is named.
  4. Share of voice: your mentions compared with competitors' on the same prompts.
  5. AI referral traffic: visits that arrive from AI assistants.

Google's AI optimization guide points site owners to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026 that shows citations in Microsoft Copilot. Neither covers ChatGPT or Perplexity. Our guide to AI visibility metrics covers the formulas in more detail.

How AnswerixAI helps you track AEO

When we built AnswerixAI, our team wanted a single number that reflects the answer, not the ranking. The AI visibility score weights mention rate at 60%, citation rate at 25% and position in the answer at 15%. The formula is visible in the dashboard.

Answer Engine Insights runs your prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Grok. The Starter plan covers ChatGPT and Perplexity; Growth and Business cover every platform. Citations Monitoring shows which domains each answer cites, split into your site, competitors and third parties. The Site Audit scores any public URL from 0 to 100 on 47 AEO and GEO signals and lists fixes.

Where should you start with AEO?

Learn where you already appear, fix access, then improve the pages behind your buyers' top questions. A practical first month:

  1. Week 1 — Baseline. Pick 20 to 50 buyer prompts and record who each engine names and cites.
  2. Week 2 — Access. Check robots.txt for Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Confirm key pages are indexed.
  3. Week 3 — Answers. Rewrite the top five pages so each opens with a direct answer and cites sources.
  4. Week 4 — Compare. Re-run the same prompts and compare mention and citation rates.

FAQ

Is answer engine optimization different from SEO?

Mostly no. Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO, and there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. AEO shifts the focus, not the fundamentals. You still need crawlable, indexable, helpful pages. The difference is what you measure. AEO tracks whether answers mention and cite you, not only where a page ranks.

How long does AEO take to show results?

There is no fixed timeline, and no engine publishes one. Google-based answers can only use pages that are already indexed, so indexing speed sets the floor. Other engines crawl on their own schedules. The practical approach is to set a baseline for a fixed prompt set, make changes, then compare mention and citation rates over the following weeks.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AEO?

Not for Google. Google's AI optimization guide says Google Search ignores llms.txt and similar AI text files, and that no special schema.org markup is needed for generative AI search. Structured data is still useful for rich results, and it must match the visible text. Other engines may use such files, but none of the major ones require them.

Which answer engines matter most for AEO?

It depends on where your buyers ask questions. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside the largest search engine. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini are separate products with their own crawlers or indexes. Most teams start by checking which engines already answer their category's prompts, then prioritize the two or three where competitors appear most.

Can a small website win at AEO?

Yes, and the research is encouraging. In the GEO study by Aggarwal et al. (KDD 2024), adding citations lifted visibility by 115.1% for pages ranked fifth, while the top-ranked page lost 30.3% on average. Clear, sourced, specific content can beat raw domain strength inside generated answers.
